This draft FWPA Standard (FWPA Standard G01) offers guidelines for visually grading recycled hardwood timber intended for structural use. Developed with input from various stakeholders, including industry associations and government representatives, it represents the first national effort in Australia to establish visual grading rules specifically for recycled structural timber. As a draft standard, it will be reviewed and potentially amended based on its application before formal recognition.
Key considerations for those specifying or purchasing recycled timber include the variable nature of the material, the importance of thorough discussions between buyers and suppliers, and the necessity of prior inspection of representative samples. The grades defined in this standard are unique to recycled timber, with both mandatory and advisory guidelines for its use. This standard recognises that structural recycled hardwood will contain characteristics and be of dimensions that are included in AS 2082 and AS 3818, however recycled timber also contains characteristics that differ in nature from ‘new’ sawn timber covered by those two standards including age effects which need consideration.
This standard, while similar in many aspects to the ‘new’ sawn standards is to be used independently of them and is specifically for use with recycled timber only.
