About NIFPI

The National Institute for Forest Products Innovation (NIFPI) was established under the National Forest Industries Plan 2018 to drive innovation and research in Australia’s forest and wood products industries. It operated through three virtual regional centres Gippsland (Victoria), Mount Gambier (South Australia), and Launceston (Tasmania).

These centres aimed to:

  • support cutting-edge research
  • foster collaboration
  • boost innovation
  • increase profitability
  • maintain jobs
  • grow the industries market value.

The program was jointly funded with $15 million from the Commonwealth and state governments, and attracted additional matching industry contributions, bringing the total investment in research to $33.42 million across 49 funded projects.

Each centre was guided by a regional committee that set research priorities and selected projects. Secretariate services were provided by Forest and Wood Products Australia (FWPA).

Funding of research projects under NIFPI are now closed.
