Getting her start in forestry managing a radiata and eucalypt nursery in Gippsland, forestry remains a through line in Jan Newport’s career.
Jan has worked in fields of plantation establishment, private forestry development, forest policy, and forestry education for public and private organisations including APM Forests, Primary Industries and Resources South Australia, the Victorian Department of Jobs Precincts and Regions and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and VicForests.
Now, Jodie Mason welcomes Jan to the team as FWPA’s new Forest Research Coordinator.
“Connecting with industry to help develop effective projects and initiatives is crucial to FWPA’s success,” said Jodie Mason. “Jan’s diverse and expansive experience in forestry sector brings a valuable perspective to FWPA.”
Working closely with Jodie, Jan’s role will be to assist the coordination and delivery of research projects at FWPA.
Outside of work, Jan continues to be involved in the forest industry as a Board member of Forestry Australia and serves on various forestry committees. “This experience allows me a broader and community level view of the industry, which helps contextualise my work,” said Jan.
“FWPA is the perfect fit for me, and I’m thrilled to join this skilled and creative team.”
“When I’ve let former colleagues know where I’m working – people who have been in the industry for a long time have all shared their respect for FWPA, commenting that it is an organisation that punches well above their weight and they continue to be impressed by the work that is created and the manner in which it’s conducted,” said Jan.
On a personal level, Jan’s enthusiasm about connecting urban populations to forests and trees in their environment is evident and she advocates for everyone to connect with the forests around them.
