FWPA Board adds to its leadership capability with appointment of architect Fred Chaney

We’re pleased to announce the appointment of respected architect and urban design specialist Fred Chaney as a Non-Executive Director.

With the next formal Director Selection process scheduled for 2026, the Board would have been reduced to five Directors following the recent retirements of Professor Arnel and Yvonne Pengilly. A targeted search and interview process identified Mr Chaney as the ideal candidate to support FWPA’s strategic direction and maintain the organisation’s skills-based governance framework.

FWPA Chair Craig Taylor said the appointment reflects the organisation’s ongoing commitment to ensuring strong capability across areas critical to its mission.

“The use of forest and wood products in the built environment is core to FWPA’s purpose, and strengthening expertise at the board table in this area is essential,” he said.
“Fred’s architectural and urban design credentials, combined with his governance experience, will complement the Board’s capability and support our industry-wide vision.”

Mr Chaney is a Director at Western Australian architecture and urban design practice TRCB, with extensive experience across major civic, cultural, education and transport projects. His portfolio includes master planning for the Perth Cultural Centre, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, and the University of Notre Dame’s Fremantle campus.

He has held senior governance roles across the not-for-profit and cultural sectors, including as a Director of the Green Building Council of Australia, and is nationally recognised for his leadership in environmentally sustainable design.

Mr Chaney’s appointment is effective immediately. He will serve as a Non-Executive Director until the 2026 AGM and may nominate for re-appointment through the next Director Selection process. At least three Non-Executive Director positions will be filled during that process, which will begin and be widely advertised in mid-2026.
