FWPA Releases Exterior Timber Wall Cladding Standard for Comment

To support the use of timber in construction, Forest & Wood Products Australia (FWPA) is introducing a new industry standard aimed at streamlining compliance for exterior timber wall cladding. The current complex regulatory landscape often leads to increased time and costs for projects, making timber a less attractive option for builders and designers.

The proposed FWPA Standard introduces a non-mandatory Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) solution specifically for exterior timber wall cladding systems. This innovative Standard provides a clear compliance pathway for meeting the condensation and weatherproofing provisions of the National Construction Code (NCC).

By simplifying compliance requirements, we’re not only reducing costs and project delays but also empowering builders and designers to choose timber as a preferred material.” said Boris Iskra, National Codes and Standards Manager at FWPA.

Expanding Market Opportunities for Timber Products

The aim is to seek referencing of the proposed standard in National Construction Code (NCC) for compliance purposes.

  • Currently, there are no commercial building DTS solutions for using exterior timber wall cladding Volume One of the NCC.
  • This Standard provides a first-of-its-kind pre-approved solution, significantly reducing the need for costly, customised Performance Solutions. For domestic projects under Volume Two, it accounts for modern cladding systems and updated installation methods, simplifying and expediting compliance.

By establishing a clear pathway, this standard minimises project delays, cuts construction costs, and encourages the broader adoption of timber as a sustainable material. This shift not only positions our industry’s products as a more attractive option but also expands market opportunities by lowering barriers to use in both commercial and residential construction.

FWPA Engages Industry for Inclusive Exterior Timber Wall Cladding Compliance Standard

FWPA is ensuring industry-wide engagement by consulting with a range of stakeholders, including timber cladding manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, and building associations. To achieve NCC recognition, the FWPA Standard is being developed in line with the Australian Building Codes Board’s Protocol for the Development of National Construction Code Referenced Documents.

The open public comment period is running from 13 November 2024 to 7 February 2025, and allows all relevant industry members to review, provide feedback, and voice any concerns to help shape a more inclusive and robust compliance standard.
