FWPA talks timber on the Melbourne Central upgrade

FWPA’s Mid-rise Advisory Program team has been advising on the 12-level timber addition to the GPT Group’s Melbourne Central retail building upgrade

The GPT Group has engaged Multiplex to cost the extension and expects construction to begin by the end of 2019. The Mid-rise Advisory Program team provided advice to the GPT Group and Multiplex on a range of matters relating to the design and specification of engineered timber, including fire, acoustics, material selection, supply chain and optimisation of timber systems. Cross-laminated timber was chosen for the build because it will result in less disruption to the existing retail businesses.

Melbourne already has several mid-rise timber buildings, such as the Docklands library and Forté residential tower, both built by Lendlease. In Southbank, Hume Partners Property is building a 10-level timber extension to its commercial building at 55 Southbank Boulevard, also due for completion in 2019.

The Melbourne Central extension will become Melbourne’s first timber premium office tower.
