How much does Forestry contribute to Tasmania’s Economy?

New report highlights forestry’s contribution to Tasmania and provides a roadmap for future growth

A new report commissioned by Forest and Wood Products Australia (FWPA) provides compelling evidence of the significant contribution Tasmania’s forestry industry makes to the state economy, regional communities and supply chains, while equipping industry with practical insights to support future growth. Based on independent analysis by BDO, the report quantifies the economic contribution of Tasmania’s forestry industry in 2023/24 and forecasts performance through to 2025/26.

The findings reinforce the importance of forestry as a major economic contributor and employer, with activity extending far beyond the forest gate. The report examines the full forestry value chain, including growers, harvesting and haulage contractors, silviculture businesses, processors, transport operators, wholesalers and retailers.

A major contributor to Tasmania’s economy

The report found Tasmania’s forestry industry contributed approximately $1.47 billion to gross state product (GSP) in 2023/24, representing around 4 per cent of the state economy. The industry also supported 7,590 full-time equivalent jobs and generated an estimated $2.87 billion in total output, with $660 million in household income flowing to Tasmanian workers and families.

Importantly, almost half of all jobs supported by the sector occur through flow-on effects across the supply chain and broader economy, highlighting forestry’s role as a catalyst for regional economic activity.
