Member Profile: SFM’s commitment to sustainable forestry

Established in Tasmania in 2001 by friends Andrew Morgan and David Wise, SFM has steadily expanded its team of highly skilled natural resource professionals to build a business fully committed to “future focused forestry.”

A leading Australian natural asset management and carbon project development company, SFM currently oversees over 50,000 hectares of production forests across Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia.

The company specialises in developing and managing carbon projects to help landowners, corporations, and investors maximise returns while achieving sustainability and climate goals.

The ActivAcre Carbon Project: Supporting Farm Diversification and Sustainability

One of SFM’s carbon projects, ActivAcre, allows farmers to optimise their land and diversify their on-farm revenue.

Managing Director, Andrew Morgan says the project aims to create new income, improve existing farm businesses and enhance environmental outcomes.

“The benefits of these carbon projects flow well beyond the farmer – plantation forestry is recognised globally as a key tool to mitigate climate change, capturing carbon in soil and vegetation,” he says.

“As leaders in plantation carbon project development, our approach focuses on leveraging the unique potential of plantation forestry to generate high-quality, verifiable carbon credits.”

The ActivAcre project recently planted over one million trees on almost 1,000 hectares of land in Tasmania. This is estimated to sequester over 300,000 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere.

SFM is proud of its diverse workforce, almost half of whom are women – a significant figure given the state’s industry average of 16 per cent.

Insights from SFM at the Forestry Australia Carbon Summit on Carbon Solutions

At the upcoming Forestry Australia Carbon Summit (10-11 April), SFM will present further insights from the ActivAcre project and the important role forestry can play in delivering high-integrity carbon solutions in a rapidly evolving market.
