In what is potentially a world first, a New Zealand company has developed the UniPod, an open-source prefabricated bathroom and kitchen ‘pod’. The UniPod is like a giant piece of Lego and has been designed to be stackable and integrate with other pods for mulit-unit housing.
While custom bathroom pods are used globally for the rapid delivery of units, the UniPod goes one step further as the first open-source design. Online instructions for assembling the pod is now available to manufacturers and it is expected that this PrefabNZ initiative will help develop the prefabrication market further.
The UniPod design “is innovative and intensive – cleverly combining all of the necessary functional requirements in a smart wall services core that is highly space efficient. Its small space means a high degree of usability for different building types and assists with installation logistics, manoeuvrability and cranage,” according to PrefabNZ Board Chair Daiman Otto.
