Nippon Paper Industries (NPI) has created new paper-based materials by combining wood pulp and mineral particles. Materials created through the process have all the characteristics and advantages of minerals, paper and cellulose fibres.
During the manufacturing process, mineral particles are densely bonded onto the surface of cellulose fibres, making it possible to manufacture paper with a content ratio of up to 90% minerals. This material can then be processed into different shapes such as wet pulp, sheets, boards (laminates) and powder.
NPI is looking to use this method to develop commercial products including flame retardant wallpaper and partition boards, paper towels with deodorising and antibacterial properties, and construction materials with radiation shielding effects.
