Nurturing young Aussie change-makers in forestry research

FWPA is proud to congratulate Dr Ashley Jones, winner of the forest and wood products industry category in the 2023 Science and Innovation Awards.

Our FWPA representative judge, Statistics & Economics Manager Kevin Peachey, proudly presented Dr Ashley (Ash) Jones, from the Australian National University, with the award for his work in identifying the dynamic plant ribonucleic acid (RNA) modifications needed to combat myrtle rust.

“FWPA is a proud sponsor of this award, which showcases up and coming young scientists in the forestry and wood products sector, encouraging innovation and providing well-deserved recognition to these young Australian change-makers,” Peachey said.

“Well done and congratulations to Ash, as well as all the winners on the night. Each of these young award winners were much-deserved recipients.”

The 2023 Science and Innovation Awards for Young People in Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is a competitive grants program that financially supports young people to undertake projects on innovative or emerging scientific issues which will contribute to the ongoing success and sustainability of Australia’s agriculture, fisheries and forestry industries.

The aim is to encourage science, innovation and technology in rural industries and help advance the careers of young researchers, scientists, producers and innovators through national recognition of their research projects.

The awards have already helped almost 300 young Australians make their ideas a reality and showcase their talent to the world.

Coordinated by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES), part of the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, the awards were presented by the Hon. Murray Watt, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry during a dinner held on Wednesday 8 March.
