Open for Review: Code of Practice Fire Retardant Coatings Applied to Wood Products

Forest and Wood Products Australia through the WoodSolutions program have developed a Code of Practice for Fire Retardant and Coatings which is now available for public comment and feedback.

The primary purpose of this Code of Practice is for the use of fire retardant coatings applied to wood products to achieve the fire hazard properties required by the National Construction Code (NCC). This Code of Practice is intended to supplement the NCC by addressing issues relating to the supply, testing, installation and maintenance of fire retardant coatings. Where there is any conflict with requirements of the current edition of the NCC or other relevant legislation, the NCC and other legislation takes precedence.

Typical fire retardant coatings are:

  • Paints and varnishes
  • Intumescent coatings
  • Encapsulation coating systems
  • Surface treatments with liquids

Fire retardant coatings form part of a system comprising a wood product substrate, the fire retardant coatings, and primers, undercoats and top coats, if used in conjunction with the fire retardant.
