Pacific Timber Engineering Conference headed for Brisbane

The Future Timber Hub is preparing to host its fifth Pacific Timber Engineering Conference (PTEC).

Between 10 and 12 July, PTEC 2019 will provide a forum for interested parties to share the latest developments in research and applications for timber in construction.

Industry members, academics, practitioners, researchers and students from across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond are invited to attend the event at Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Organisers hope the event will provide a more practitioner-focused program to complement the World Conference on Timber Engineering (WCTE), which is due to be held in Chile next year.

Amongst the many global initiatives that will be showcased, the program features a variety of FWPA-supported research projects, with local speaking talent appearing alongside international experts who rarely present in Australia.

“We have a range of topics that we are going to cover in this conference, but if I am to pick some of the most exciting topics, those would be the fire safety of timber buildings, then engineered timber products, the construction of timber buildings – especially automation in construction – and then sustainability,” said Associate Professor Dilum Fernando, of the University of Queensland School of Civil Engineering, who is on the event’s local organising committee.

Speaking talent from overseas includes Professor Jose Torero, head of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at University College London, who will lead the discussion on fire safety. His work in the area has helped demonstrate that fires in CLT compartments have the ability to self-extinguish without intervention.

Also on the line-up are Professor Frank Lam, of the University of British Columbia, who will be presenting on building design and construction, and Professor Minjuan He, of Tongji University, who will talk on timber construction in China. These presentations promise to be particularly pertinent, considering both China and Canada have recently witnessed a marked increase in the uptake of new construction methods and advanced materials.
