Proposed CRC bid update

In the last issue of ForWood we reported that FWPA had taken the lead in developing a bid for a cooperative research centre (CRC) with the working title of the CRC – Transforming Woodfibres Program.

This bid process required significant consultation with members, as well as the pulp and paper sector and key industry partners, such as nailplate manufacturers, and domestic and international research providers.

The issues and proposed research programs developed from the consultation were closely linked to a series of ongoing challenges facing the sector, all of which had been previously raised and discussed by FWPA boards over the past seven years.

As part of the 2014-15 Federal Budget, the government has decided to reduce funding for the Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) program by $80 million over the forward estimates. As a result of this decision, the current 17th CRC selection round was closed for new CRC proposals. However, based on the high level of in-principle support, FWPA will continue to explore other mechanisms to fund the proposed research program.
