Research says wood products are better for health

Surrounding yourself with wood products is good for your health, according to a study commissioned by environmental organisation Planet Ark.

The findings, based on meta-analysis of dozens of studies from both here and abroad, suggest that timber products have atmospheric and even psychological properties unmatched by synthetics.

Planet Ark’s Brad Grey said the evidence was almost undeniable.

“What we’re finding is wood is having real and measurable benefits for the people who are surrounded by it,” he said.

“There’s a whole suite of research around the world which shows there are positive, health-giving benefits to people when they’re surrounded by wood rather than if they’re surrounded by plasterboard or steel.”

The research also estimates that Australians spend more than 90% of their time indoors, making the findings regarding the health benefits of wood more crucial, particularly with regard to children’s education.
