The awards, which celebrate excellence in Aussie timber design, were live-streamed via YouTube on Tuesday 30 November, and WoodSolutions was proud to once again be Platinum Sponsor.
During the event, global architecture and design firm dwp Australia and consulting engineers Northrop were recognised for their combined efforts in the creation of the Eric Tweedale Stadium — Australia’s first mass timber building of its type.
This structure was hailed by judges as a particularly impressive feat of timber engineering and an excellent example of the use of glulam.
Its ambitious roof structure design incorporates a main cantilever spanning 8.5 metres over the spectator seating, while 13.7 metre beams span the multipurpose area. Furthermore, each end of the structure features a double-cantilevered roof frame, while the entire roof slopes west, supported by 26 timber glulam columns.
The stadium includes a 760-seat grandstand with change rooms, multipurpose rooms, a first-floor function space, commercial kitchen and an outdoor viewing deck. The judges noted the effectiveness of the natural finish of the timber in creating a warm and welcoming space, while simultaneously providing state-of-the-art facilities for sports participants and spectators alike.
“I would like to congratulate dwp Australia, Northrop, and everyone who entered the Australian Timber Design Awards on their outstanding work,” said Eileen Newbury, Head of the WoodSolutions program and Head of Marketing and Communications at FWPA.
“The impressive nature of the many award entries received this year reflects the ever-increasing popularity of wood and wood products in the built environment.”
For over two decades, the awards have promoted and encouraged outstanding timber design. The awards are open to builders, designers, architects, engineers and landscapers involved with the design or building of structures that feature timber. A Rising Star award is also available to students and entrants aged 35 or under.
