Congratulations to James Kondilios, a young scientist whose research on Eucalyptus globulus breeding has been recognised with an award sponsored by FWPA.
Mr Kondilios was the winner of the forest and wood products category of the 2019 Science and Innovation Awards for Young People in Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. The awards are run by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences which this year distributed grants worth $300,000 among 14 young agricultural researchers.
Mr Kondilios’ research will help identify E. globulus breeding materials for future plantings that are purposely selected to perform best under potential climate change models.
He said: “We want to have a major industry impact. [The climate] is a really big problem that humanity is going to face… I want to be at the forefront of it.”
The awards highlight the value of young scientists and up-and-coming industry leaders and FWPA is pleased to see so many emerging scientists working on important industry projects with an eye to the future.
We are confident tomorrow’s leaders in forestry will not only advance industry, but also provide immense benefits to help it adapt to potential climate change scenarios.
