Summary
The South East NSW Regional Forestry Hub summarised a survey of farm forestry trial sites established in the Bega Valley between 1994 and 2008 under the South East NSW Farm Forestry Project. The survey assessed species performance and the influence of management practices, drawing on limited historical records and field measurements. Many sites had changed ownership, and most current landholders had little knowledge of the original plantings or management.
Most sites had received minimal management after planting, with project officers managing plantings until the project concluded in 2008. Some landholders continued pruning for up to ten years, although thinning and ongoing management were limited.
Several hardwood species, including Eucalyptus botryoides, E. muelleriana, E. saligna, Corymbia maculata, and E. microcorys showed good long-term growth, while species such as E. nitens performed poorly. Pinus radiata exhibited moderate growth but was constrained by limited management.
Overall, most landholders intended to retain the sites for biodiversity and landscape values, although there was interest in management options to improve forestry or harvest potential.
