Summary
This project aimed to assess the current and future skills and training needs of the forestry and wood products industry across the Murray Region Forestry Hub. The study examined workforce capacity, skills shortages, training availability, and emerging industry requirements through surveys, stakeholder interviews, and analysis of regional labour market data. It identified persistent difficulties in attracting, recruiting, and retaining workers, particularly in operational and technical roles such as machinery operators, fitters, electricians, and forestry professionals. An ageing workforce and increasing competition for skilled labour were found to intensify these challenges. The report also highlighted growing demand for digital, leadership, compliance, and technical skills as businesses adopt new technologies and adapt to changing regulatory and market conditions. It recommended stronger collaboration between industry, training providers, and government to improve training pathways and workforce development. The findings provide an evidence base to support targeted workforce initiatives and strengthen the long-term sustainability, productivity, and resilience of the region’s forestry sector.
