Purpose

The purpose of the project was to develop a science-based methodology for the Australian wood product manufacturing sector to establish carbon emissions reduction targets and support the industry’s transition to a low-carbon future.

Summary

The project developed a science-based framework to help Australian timber manufacturers set carbon emissions reduction targets. The team created a customised methodology, practical tools, and guidance aligned with the Science Based Targets. The approach was tested with Timberlink, validated it through industry engagement, and produced resources to support companies in calculating their carbon footprint and setting credible targets. This work positioned the timber industry to lead in low-carbon construction and meet growing market and regulatory demands for sustainable materials.

Benefits to the Forest and Wood Products Industry

The project enables timber companies to accurately measure their carbon footprint and set credible, science-based emissions reduction targets, helping them meet growing market and regulatory demands. The project has produced a suite of resources for the Australian timber industry regarding carbon foot printing and target setting. Each resource is available online.

Acknowledgement

This work was supported by funding provided to Forest and Wood Products Australia (FWPA) to administer the National Institute for Forest Products Innovation program (NIFPI).

Funding for the program was provided by the Australian Government, the South Australian Government and Australian forest and wood products industry
