Summary
The Gippsland Forestry Hub’s First Nations Engagement Framework outlined a structured approach for engaging with the Bunurong and Gunaikurnai Traditional Owners in Gippsland. The framework recognised the enduring connection of First Nations peoples to their land and emphasised the importance of respectful, meaningful partnerships in the region’s forestry sector. It outlined key principles: meaningful engagement, respect for Traditional Owner decision-making, protection of Country and cultural heritage, and promotion of cultural awareness. The framework advocated for collaboration and empowerment of Traditional Owners in decision-making. It provided practical guidance for preparing and conducting engagement, including understanding legal rights, meeting on Country, and fostering long-term relationships. The document serves as both a guide for the forestry industry on when, how and why to engage with Traditional Owners, and a living resource, aiming to deepen cultural understanding and support sustainable, inclusive economic opportunities in Gippsland.
