Summary
The Gippsland region has been going through considerable change driven by shifts in state government policy (cessation of native forestry), demographic change, changes in agriculture and agricultural markets, and aging industrial infrastructure. These changes pose threats but also open opportunities for the forest and wood products industry in the region.
The Gippsland Forestry Hub 30 Year Strategy aimed to guide the sustainable growth of Gippsland’s forest and wood products industry and move it to a thriving state in 30 years. It sets out four strategic themes: fibre security, innovation, reliable information, and community contribution. The plan addresses challenges such as the transition from native forest harvesting to plantations, policy and regulatory barriers, and the need for skilled workers. It emphasises collaboration with Traditional Owners and other stakeholders, and highlights opportunities for innovation, education, and infrastructure development. By providing a framework for short, medium, and long-term actions, the strategy seeks to make Gippsland a centre of excellence for forestry, supporting a sustainable industry for future generations.
