Summary

This project explored opportunities in Gippsland for plantation expansion, addressing fibre security constraints and assessing future market needs. Using a four-stage approach of reviewing history, assessing industry needs, evaluating land suitability, and engaging stakeholders, it identified strategic forestry opportunities aligned with the Hub’s 30-year strategy.

The study examined plantation expansion potential, processing innovations, carbon project opportunities, and barriers to new plantations. Stakeholder workshops highlighted common themes such as supporting new farmers, improving education on the value of wood, and adopting landholder-centric communication.

A SWOT analysis emphasised that Gippsland is a highly productive area for growing trees but, it needs solutions tailored to local areas as the region is not homogenous. The analysis highlighted opportunities in workforce development, clearer price signals, and collaboration with Traditional Owners, while threats involved declining plantation areas, climate change, and knowledge loss. The project recommended ongoing stakeholder engagement to develop a shared vision for forestry, and a communications plan supported by reliable information sources.
