Summary
This project conducted a spatial analysis of cleared land in the North East NSW region to identify areas suitable for new planted forests. Multiple spatial datasets were utilised to model environmental and socio-economic factors influencing land suitability for five planted forest types: commercial hardwood, southern pine and radiata pine plantations, and farm forestry and environmental plantings.
Of the land cleared of native vegetation, 630,000 ha were identified as suitable for commercial hardwood plantations, 730,000 ha for southern pine, and 740,000 ha for radiata pine. When optimality parameters were applied, including growth potential, bushfire risk, location, and market constraints, the amount of suitable land for these planted forest types was reduced.
Fewer geographic constraints applied to farm forestry and environmental plantings, with 1.52 million ha and 3.52 million ha identified, respectively. The findings, maps, and spatial layers produced may support strategic planning and decision-making for future plantation establishment across the North East NSW region.
