Summary
This project aimed to identify opportunities for expanding softwood plantations (Pinus radiata) in the Central West NSW Forestry Hub region. It achieved this through mapping areas that were both suitable and available for plantation development with consideration for physical and environmental characteristics and land zoning restrictions. The study assigned capability and productivity categories to areas using a strategic regional modelling approach that highlighted zones most viable for plantation development.
The outputs included maps and data layers showing where plantations could be established and their expected productivity. Analysis revealed that 46% of the 2.28 million ha region could support commercially viable Pinus radiata plantations, with some areas more capable than others.
To strengthen future planning, the report recommended refining the mapping with actual productivity data from existing plantations, developing financial tools for landowners, and assessing climate change impacts on plantations. These recommended enhancements could improve accuracy and support large-scale plantation expansion across the region.
