Summary
This review assessed the bushfire management capacity and the associated risk across the Central West Forestry NSW region. It also identified improvements for plantation fire preparedness.
Fire response capability analysis showed the Forestry Corporation of NSW (FCNSW) have robust resources for industry fire management and experience with plantation fires, utilising multi-mode rapid initial attacks. In contrast, private growers were found to rely on the Rural Fire Service (RFS), which do not have expertise with plantation fires.
Key fire risk optimisation measures outlined in the review include early detection, aggressive multi-mode initial attacks, night operations, and well-designed plantations with maintained access and water points.
Recommendations focused on improvements in advanced detection technologies, rapid-response resources, formalised industry coordination, and stronger collaboration with RFS through training and engagement.
