Summary
This study aimed to understand the degree to which the social license exists to operate the North East NSW native forestry industry and to identify opportunities for improvement. The research involved focus groups, surveys, and interviews with key opinion leaders across North East NSW and Greater Sydney.
Quantitative research indicated that most participants regarded native forest harvesting as a legitimate industry, though levels of perceived trust and ethical practice were bit lower. Focus group participants expressed concern that closing the industry could increase reliance on imported timber, raise housing costs, and lead to greater use of plastics.
Participants suggested improvements for the industry including clearer information about harvesting processes, increased community engagement, transparency around environmental protections, compliance, and stronger involvement of Traditional Owners.
