Summary
This project aimed to examine the future business needs, challenges, and priorities of the softwood forest industry in the Murray Region Forestry Hub following the 2019–20 bushfires. The study drew on interviews and survey responses from plantation managers, processors, contractors, and other forestry businesses to understand industry experiences during bushfire recovery and the transition to a reduced timber resource.
The findings highlighted the success of the large-scale salvage operation, which was supported by strong industry collaboration, innovation, and government recovery funding. Businesses reported ongoing challenges including labour shortages, an ageing workforce, recruitment difficulties, rising input costs, supply chain constraints, and reduced timber availability over the next decade. Despite these pressures, industry participants expressed confidence in the long-term future of the sector. Key priorities included expanding the softwood plantation estate, strengthening bushfire prevention and response capabilities, investing in regional communities, improving workforce attraction and training pathways, supporting transport and logistics infrastructure, and promoting a positive public perception of forestry. These actions were identified as critical to building industry resilience and supporting long-term growth.
