Summary
This project examined how Gippsland farmers incorporated agroforestry to achieve environmental, economic, and social benefits. Four case studies showcased farmers’ experiences, challenges, and key lessons from agroforestry. Farmers commonly combined plantations with livestock grazing, noting additional benefits such as shelter and extra feed.
The case studies highlighted the importance of informed planning and professional forestry advice, with programs like those offered by the Gippsland Agroforestry Network providing education and confidence to establish plantations. Key lessons included selecting species suited to local conditions, timely management, and realistic expectations around contracting and maintenance costs. Farmers also expressed satisfaction in seeing diverse wildlife in their plantations, reinforcing the broader environmental value of agroforestry.
Recommendations focused on improving viability for small-scale owners through coordinated harvests to reduce costs, ongoing mentoring and training, transparent timber markets, and sustained government incentives.
