Regional Forestry Hubs were established under the National Forest Industries Plan 2018.

Nine regional forestry hubs were announced by the Prime Minister on 16 February 2019 and a further two hubs were announced in the 2021-22 budget.

The 11 regional Forestry Hubs are:

  • North-east New South Wales
  • Central west New South Wales
  • South East (Eden) New South Wales
  • Murray Region New South Wales/Victoria
  • Gippsland, Victoria
  • Green Triangle, (South Australia and south-west Victoria)
  • South and central Queensland
  • North Queensland
  • South-west Western Australia
  • Tasmania
  • Northern Territory.

The Regional Forestry Hub regions were chosen to represent existing concentrations of wood supply resources, combined with significant existing processing and/or manufacturing operations, established domestic and/or international transport links, and strong potential for growth.

Each Regional Forestry Hub has a steering committee of industry stakeholders. The committees determine the priorities for their region. The Hubs work with industry, state and local governments, and other key stakeholders to prepare and provide the Government with strategic planning, technical assessments and analyses that aim to support growth in the forest industries in their region.

The role of the Hubs was expanded in 2025 to also include extension services, enabling them to inform local industries and landholders of the outcomes of research and innovation work, including from FWPA and Australian Forest and Wood Innovations (AFWI).

The Regional Forestry Hub reports have been included in Forest and Wood Products Australia (FWPA) library – FWPA is an industry-owned, not-for-profit Rural Research and Development Corporation (RDC) for Australia’s forest and wood products industry.
