FWPA’s Head of Marketing and Communications and Head of WoodSolutions program, Eileen Newbury, stepped down from her role on Friday 12 May, after an incredible 13 years.
Newbury was a powerhouse within the organisation and industry, and expertly led a team that oversaw several important initiatives that helped reframe the forestry sector and how it is perceived.
First starting as a contractor in 2010 before joining FWPA in a permanent capacity in 2013, Eileen’s achievements have played a vital role in FWPA’s ongoing success.
“Eileen has an energy and a passion for FWPA and for the industry that was felt by all and will be greatly missed,” FWPA CEO Andrew Leighton said.
“Data and research have always underpinned her marketing and education of the industry. As the Head of the WoodSolutions program, Eileen was integral in lifting the recognition of wood and wood products in the Design and Build industry.
“Testament to this influence was the introduction of The Ultimate Renewable™ and its ongoing success in informing the consumer audience about the clear environmental benefits of wood and wood products.
“We wish Eileen every success and know she will remain a friend of FWPA and the industry for a long time to come.”
When asked about her proudest moment, Newbury was quick to mention the project that showcased wood and its tangible impact on the health and happiness of people. The work confirmed the importance of biophilic design, and the role wood plays in creating a healthy built environment.
Launched at the Venice Biennale with the Australian Institute of Architects, the campaign and research behind it achieved national success, was recognised and endorsed internationally, and helped place FWPA on a global stage.
“I feel very proud of the work and successes achieved over the 13 years and there have been many highlights during my time – all of which would not have been possible without the FWPA family,” Newbury said.
“I’d like to thank CEO Andrew Leighton, and my FWPA colleagues and key contractors for all the support and encouragement that was afforded to me.”
When asked what’s next, Newbury said, “I love the industry and will continue to work within it in some capacity.”
Following Newbury’s departure, Sarah Downey was appointed FWPA Head of Marketing and Communications.
Downey has been with the organisation in the role of Senior Marketing and Communications Manager since 2021.
Leighton said Downey has shown leadership and exemplary performance in her current role, quickly grasping the nuances of both the organisation and industry.
“Sarah was the ideal choice. She is familiar with the role and all elements of FWPA’s diverse range of marketing programs. Her knowledge and experience will ensure a seamless transition for the organisation,” Leighton said.
“The step up for Sarah also comes at an important time in our organisation’s future as we roll out our new strategic plan.
“Sarah has a clear understanding of FWPA’s objective of driving growth in the demand for forest and wood products, and of our commitment to delivering a high level of transparency and accountability to our members. She exemplifies the qualities of openness, honesty, and collaboration that we strive to embed in FWPA’s culture.
“On behalf of everyone at FWPA we congratulate Sarah and look forward to working with and supporting her in her new role.”
Downey said she was thrilled to take on the role, and thanked Andrew and the board for their confidence in offering her the position.
“FWPA is an incredible organisation that plays a critical part in both educating and promoting the benefits of wood and wood products,” Downey said.
“I love the diversity of the industry, the people, and the many ways we engage with our stakeholders. It’s always interesting and challenging.
“This role comes with a talented team and the support of my colleagues. I look forward to leading FWPA’s marketing and communications efforts and I’m confident we can continue to deliver effective and impactful marketing programs on behalf of our members and key stakeholders.”
Downey officially began in her new position on 22 May.
