Farewell to Jan Newport – Celebrating a Career of Impact and Leadership in Forestry

This week we say farewell to Janette “Jan” Newport, who concludes her time with Forest & Wood Products Australia (FWPA) after serving as Forest Research Coordinator since 2022.

Jan’s career in forestry spans more than three decades between Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Across roles in both public and private sectors, as well as time as an independent forester, Jan has continually demonstrated a unique blend of technical expertise, leadership, and deep respect for the forests she serves.

When Jan joined FWPA, her presence was felt immediately. She brought energy, professionalism, and a wealth of experience in forestry operations, plantation silviculture, climate change planning, natural resource management, and business strategy.

At FWPA, Jan played a vital role in coordinating and delivering forestry Research, Development & Extension (RD&E) programs. Her ability to manage complex projects while fostering collaboration across stakeholders has been a hallmark of her contribution. A standout moment was her leadership in the 2023 Mission Forêt initiative, which saw 32 French forestry professionals travel to Australia to exchange ideas and expertise. Jan’s reflections on the program captured her belief in collaboration:

“It was so encouraging to see such a high level of engagement between the visiting French foresters, and the Australian contingent…”

More recently, as part of the January 2025 Forestry Research Program roll-out, the groundwork she helped lay continues to guide new proposals set to advance critical priorities like climate change, fire resilience, plantation silviculture, tree breeding, and genetic improvement.

That same spirit of connection and knowledge-sharing has been evident throughout her career. From her early work as a Nursery Forester with APM Forests in Gippsland, to roles with ForestrySA, VicForests, and government departments in South Australia and Victoria, Jan has contributed at every level of the industry – from hands-on practice to shaping national strategy and policy.

Her leadership extended beyond the workplace too, serving as a Director and Victorian Division Committee Member with Forestry Australia, a Board Member of Australian Forest Growers, and a volunteer grower with Trees for Life (SA).

As FWPA launches into the next phase of its forestry research program, much of the groundwork Jan has helped to establish will continue to guide future projects and priorities.

Jan, your passion, knowledge, and collaborative approach have left a lasting impact – not only on FWPA, but across the forestry community. Thank you for your remarkable contribution, your generosity of spirit, and for helping to shape the future of sustainable forestry in Australia.

We wish you every success in your next chapter. 🌱
