Researchers have developed a new method to automatically recognise tree species based on laser scanning measurements.
The study, a joint research project between Tampere University of Technology’s (TUT) mathematics laboratory and the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), enables the calculation of classification features in a completely new way.
Comprehensive 3D models of individual trees are developed to help determine the structure of the tree stem and branches.
“This method also allows for efficient measuring of the extensive materials needed in forest ecology research concerning tree species, and the competitive relationships between their crowns,” says Luke principal scientist Raisa Mäkipää.
In the future this method could used to assist automation of timber measurements during felling, selection of trees to be felled and optimisation of cutting.
