Further investment into nutrient management in Australian forest plantations is needed to maintain sustainability and profitability in the face of rising fertiliser prices, according to researchers responsible for the most exhaustive study of fertiliser use in Australia since the early 1990s.
They found that, while there is evidence that mid-rotation fertiliser application can be highly profitable if properly targeted, particularly in softwood plantations, there has been very little research of the response to fertiliser in hardwood plantations. Forest managers are further limited by a lack of methods with which to measure this response. As a result it is likely there is potential to increase profitability by changing current fertiliser strategies.
