Purpose

The aim of this project was to capture detailed information on the mechanical properties of structural softwood timber produced in Australia that is used mainly for timber framed construction.

Summary

To assess the mechanical properties of structural softwood timber produced across Australia, researchers collected timber samples from 13 mills, representing 90% of national machine graded pine (MGP) production. They tested structural sized timber for bending strength and stiffness, tension strength, compression strength, beam shear, and density. The research found that sampled timber consistently exceeded the design values outlined in AS 1720.1-2010, confirming the effectiveness of current grading practices. Design values for timber density were proposed for future updates to AS 1720.1 connection design models. A link between density and Modulus of Elasticity (MoE) has been suggested, so that if Modulus of elasticity requirements change for MGP grades, the density values can be updated accordingly. The study provided a comprehensive dataset for future development of stress grades and design values.

Benefits to the Forest and Wood Products Industry

  • The project helped confirm that Australian softwood timber meets and exceeds national design standards.
  • It provides updated data that allowed manufacturers to improve grading accuracy and product consistency.
  • The findings support better confidence in using locally produced timber for structural applications, boosting market reliability.
  • Offers a foundation for enhancing timber design standards and grading processes.
