Purpose
The project aimed to develop and test genetically improved radiata pine and blue gum trees that were better adapted to challenging environments. Researchers established field trials to identify tree varieties with higher productivity, resilience, and suitability for future climate conditions and industry expansion.
Summary
The project developed genetically improved radiata pine and blue gum trees to enhance productivity and resilience in changing environments. Researchers established 23 field trials across diverse site types during the 2023 and 2024 planting seasons. They tested advanced generation families, hybrids, and elite cuttings to assess performance under varying environmental conditions. Scientists evaluated genotype – environment interactions to improve selection accuracy and breeding outcomes. The project expanded genetic testing beyond traditional plantation areas to address climate risks and land limitations. By analysing growth, survival, and adaptability, the team identified genotypes better suited for future deployment. This work supported a pre-emptive climate adaptation strategy and laid the foundation for more productive, resilient plantations across Australia.
Benefits to the Forest and Wood Products Industry
The objective of this project is to double the rate of genetic gain in the breeding program and provide tangible benefits to the industry. The current trend lines of genetic gain suggest significant progress but a few more years data is needed to confirm this trend. The trial data produced from this research will help industry to:
- Improve the selection and deployment of genotypes that are better adapted to future climate scenarios, including hotter and drier conditions.
- Quantify genotype – environment interactions, which strengthens breeding decisions and long-term sustainability.
