Purpose

The report aimed to develop best-practice fatigue management strategies tailored for the Australian forestry industry. It identified key risks and proposed solutions to improve worker safety and productivity.

Summary

The report investigated fatigue risks in the Australian forestry industry and developed best-practice management strategies. Researchers collected data from workers, contractors, and managers through interviews and surveys. They identified key fatigue contributors, including long shifts, remote work locations, and irregular schedules. The team analysed current fatigue policies and compared them with practices in other industries. They found gaps in awareness, training, and monitoring. The project team designed practical tools and guidelines to help companies reduce fatigue-related risks. They tested these tools in real forestry operations and received positive feedback. The report recommended regular training, better shift planning, and improved communication between workers and supervisors. It also encouraged the use of technology to monitor fatigue and support decision-making. By applying these strategies, the industry improved safety, productivity, and worker wellbeing. The findings provided a foundation for national standards and future research in fatigue management.

Benefits to the Forest and Wood Products Industry

The implementation of fatigue management strategies enhances workplace safety and operational efficiency across the Australian forestry industry. These practices enable managers to monitor fatigue effectively and support the development of healthier work schedules, thereby promoting employee wellbeing and long-term sustainability.
