Purpose
This project aimed to evaluate the fire, acoustic, and structural performance of prefabricated Shining Gum timber composite floor systems for use in multi-storey buildings. Researchers tested full-scale prototypes to determine if the systems met the National Construction Code 2022 standards
Summary
Researchers investigated the performance of prefabricated Shining Gum timber composite floor systems for use in multi-storey buildings. They designed and built full-scale prototypes, then tested them for fire resistance, acoustic insulation, and structural strength. The fire tests showed that the systems met the required 90-minute fire rating, while acoustic tests confirmed compliance with airborne and impact sound insulation standards. Structural testing demonstrated that the floors could handle loads expected in residential and commercial buildings. The project also explored different composite configurations to improve performance and reduce material use. Overall, the research proved that Shining Gum composite floors are safe, strong, and quiet enough for modern buildings, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional concrete and steel systems.
Benefits to the Forest and Wood Products Industry
- Supports sustainable building: The use of plantation-grown Shining Gum promotes renewable forestry and reduces reliance on imported or non-renewable materials.
- Improves construction efficiency: Prefabricated floor systems reduce on-site labour and construction time, lowering costs and improving project timelines.
- Meets national standards: The systems comply with the National Construction Code 2022 for fire, acoustic, and structural performance, making them ready for commercial use.
- Expands market opportunities: The proven performance of these timber systems opens new possibilities for multi-storey timber buildings in residential and commercial sectors.
