Summary

This project, in 2021, assessed the education, skills, and training required to support the forestry and wood products industry in Gippsland through change. Using online surveys, desktop research, and interviews with training providers, the project examined skills gaps, workforce development, diversity, career pathways, and access to education and training opportunities.

Findings revealed significant shortages in industry-specific skills such as wood machining, saw technicians, and machinery operators, and challenges in recruitment, retention, and diversity. Limited access to training and poor awareness of career opportunities highlighted the need for targeted training programs and purpose-built facilities.

Recommendations aimed to increase training availability in Gippsland through increased workforce planning, education, and collaboration. These solutions focused on creating a forestry training centre, supporting accredited programs, and fostering industry-school partnerships. They also sought to promote diversity, engage the Gunaikurnai people, improve housing and infrastructure near job sites, and assist the industry in accessing government funding opportunities.
