Published Date

June 2006

This project has developed viable alternatives to hardwood girders, particularly for timber bridge construction. This research can be divided into the functional characteristics of the individual elements of the girder, and the specific structural performance requirements of different types of girders themselves. The main structural elements used in the production of the hybrid girder are:

‘Hybrid’ modules containing glass fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) pultrusion; Steel reinforcing bar and steel stressing strand; and PFR (particulate filled epoxy resin). The report also looked at girder components including LVL, Epoxy adhesive and Protective coatings.
