Summary
The South East NSW Regional Forestry Hub supported the delivery of a Master TreeGrower (MTG) program aimed to build landholders’ skills and confidence to start or expand farm forestry in South East NSW. The course targeted private landholders who wanted practical, science-based guidance on growing and managing trees for environmental and economic outcomes.
The program used an eight-day, field-based approach delivered over four two-day blocks in Bega. Expert presenters led sessions on silviculture, native forest management, markets, and risk, supported by site visits to working forests and a timber mill. This hands-on structure helped participants connect theory to real-world practice and industry pathways.
The course engaged 35 landholders managing about 2,000 hectares. Feedback showed very high satisfaction and. Participants reported stronger understanding of tree science, greater likelihood of planting or managing trees for timber, and a clearer sense of belonging to a regional grower network.
The report recommends continuing the MTG program, strengthening regional networks, and supporting follow-up activities to turn learning into on-ground forestry projects.
