Summary
This project aimed to address the growing gap between wood fibre supply and processing capacity in the Central West NSW forestry region. It assessed Pinus radiata plantation productivity through consultations, field observations, and data analysis, considering site conditions, genetics, silviculture, economics, and technology.
Regional yield tables indicated that plantations in the Central West NSW region performed at the lower end of productivity compared to other regions across Australia. Productivity variability was noted within the region, likely due to site characteristics and historical management. This variation offers an opportunity for considerable productivity improvements.
The report outlined twelve recommended actions to increase fibre supply and utilisation and boost long-term productivity. These included improving supply chain communication, fostering industry collaboration, and implementing regional initiatives such as reviews, mapping, and feasibility studies. If adopted, these recommendations could potentially deliver long-term increases in available fibre between 180,000-360,000m3/yr, and boost productivity by 12-27%, helping secure future fibre availability and the region’s forest and wood products sector.
