Wood modification technologies: Prospects for Australian production

Webinar held Wednesday 8th July, 2015. Presented by Dr Elizabeth Dunningham, Scion.

Wood modification technologies are growing globally and being imported into many countries around the world, including  Australia. Therefore it is timely to consider these technologies and how they could be applied into Australia.

We have summarised technical literature and also gleaned some information on commercial  operations, and from this  information, ranked six modification options for their suitability for Australia. This could be the beginning of something new for the wood industry in Australia.

Presenter:
Dr Elizabeth Dunningham is a wood scientist with 27 years’ research experience and the project leader of wood modification research at Scion. Her special interests are in developing technologies with enhanced dimensional stability and weathering performance in-service. She has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Chemistry from University of Canterbury (NZ), and a doctorate in Wood Science from University of Wales Bangor, UK. Co-author Rosie Sargent is a process engineer (University of Canterbury) and was involved with the first New Zealand trials of a thermal modification process on radiata pine. She also has experience in wood drying and scale-up trials of wood modifications. Both authors are based in Rotorua.
