FWPA’s approach to research and development is built on collaboration, practicality and clear industry benefit. Three new projects now underway reflect this focus and address some of the sector’s most pressing challenges.
Turning innovation into practical outcomes
FWPA works with growers, researchers and partners to ensure research is grounded in real-world needs. The latest projects focus on improving productivity, strengthening forest health and supporting more sustainable management practices.
Automation and robotics for forestry
An industry-led automation and robotics technology scan is now underway. The project is assessing global forestry and transferable automation technologies to identify those with the greatest potential for Australian forests.
Rather than promoting untested solutions, the research will provide objective, evidence-based insights to help industry prioritise future investment, build capability and make informed decisions about adoption.
Smarter forest health surveillance
A GIS-Integrated Forest Health Surveillance project will build on previous research into satellite-based health monitoring of Australia’s pine plantations.
The project aims to operationalise a cloud-based system that integrates satellite data with existing forestry GIS systems, enabling earlier detection of unexpected forest disturbances and more targeted on-ground responses. This approach has the potential to reduce costs and improve decision-making across plantation operations.
Targeted biological control of blackberry
The third project focuses on improving the biological control of blackberry in forests.
Blackberry remains a significant challenge for forest productivity, access and fire management. This research aims to strengthen integrated weed management by developing targeted biological control tools that complement existing practices and reduce reliance on chemical control.
FWPA’s role
Across all three projects, FWPA’s role is to connect industry priorities with research capability, support collaboration and ensure outcomes are relevant, practical and accessible.
By progressing these projects, FWPA continues to invest in research that supports a productive, resilient and sustainable forest industry.
