This project assessed the net carbon impact of the plantation forestry industry in the Central West region of NSW.
The total carbon emissions in FY21 totalled 473,574 t CO₂e across the sector’s direct and indirect emissions. Indirect emissions from outside of the companies’ value chain dominated the carbon footprint (63%), mainly from purchased materials and packaging, and upstream transport.
Biogenic carbon emissions from wood burning residues and landfill decay contributed an additional 136,376 t CO₂e. However, biogenic carbon removals through wood products and plantation forests totalled 1.71 million t CO₂e, which resulted in a net reduction of 1.1 million t CO₂e in FY21.
The report recommended improving data quality, increasing renewable electricity use, and exploring low-emission transport options in the region. The carbon emissions inventory prepared in the report will provide information and insights to any future carbon impact assessments in the region.
