Combining fire retardant & preservative systems for timber products in exposed applications – state of the art review.

This review aimed to identify fire retardants that may be combined with a preservative to protect timber from both fire and biodegradation when used in external applications.

The major findings of the review are that there are currently no commercially available combined fire retardant/preservative systems for exterior timbers that comply with both fire and durability standards; the only fire retardants currently approved for exterior use are those based on heat-cured polymeric systems. Timber treated with these systems is not considered to be preservative treated, although it has been shown that this timber is more durable than if it were untreated.
