Summary
This community survey aimed to understand local perceptions and knowledge of the forestry industry in the Gippsland region and identify strategies for industry to engage with communities in the future. Through interviews with councils, advocacy groups, and education bodies, the project explored views on industry roles, employment, and sustainability. The survey produced a thematic analysis on community perceptions related to forestry, employment, and communication of the forestry industry in the region.
Findings revealed strong stakeholder support for the industry but highlighted challenges such as mixed community messaging, limited awareness of career pathways, and uncertainty around policy changes. Outcomes emphasised the need to develop a positive image for the forestry industry to increase awareness of career opportunities and attract future employment.
Recommendations focused on promoting positive narratives, highlighting the opportunity to live and work locally within Gippsland, integrating with Traditional Owner organisations, and building stronger links with schools and local businesses. These actions could contribute to changing how the industry is perceived, raise understanding of the industry, and have flow on effects to secure future workforce generations.
