Summary

This project aimed to identify opportunities for innovation through the forest and wood products supply chain in Gippsland, to address challenges in wood fibre availability. The Gippsland region has experienced unprecedented change following the decision to cease native forest harvesting, creating concerns about future resource supply. (NB: This report was prepared before the announcement of the closure of native forestry operations in state forestry by 1 January 2024.)

The project examined innovation and infrastructure priorities to address the identified focus areas of policy and regulation, electricity, Gippsland as a national innovation centre, integration of trees into farming systems, telecommunications and data, supply chain collaboration, harvesting and haulage systems, social licence and resource availability.

Based on these areas, six recommendations were developed: strengthen industry collaboration, position Gippsland as an innovation hub, embrace digital economy opportunities, integrate forestry with agriculture, investigate alternative fibre sources, and develop a manufacturing hub centred on circular economy principles. These recommendations provide direction to ensure long-term fibre security for the region.
