This study aims to understand the social and economic impacts of the changes to land use in the region over recent time. Between 1991 and 2006 changes included: expansion of bluegum plantations; expansion of cropping; growth in the number of rural residential properties; changes to dairy farming, which declined in some areas and grew in others; growth in beef grazing; decline in grazing sheep for wool and growth in prime lambs; and growth in viticulture.
While the area of pine plantations did not change significantly over this period, some data were analysed about pine plantations to provide a better understanding of forestry in the region.
