Renewable Materials and the Built Environment in a Changing World – Challenges and Opportunities

Presented by Greg Foliente, CSIRO Ecosystem Sciences, Wednesday 5th March, 2014.

With the global megatrends and megashocks that are changing the world as a backdrop, examples of how leading stakeholders in policy, industry, professional societies and the research/academic community respond to the global and local (“glocal”) challenges are presented.

Key innovation opportunities in the built environment’s supply and value chains, especially as they relate to the forest and wood products sector, are identified. These opportunities are based on observed research and industry trends in renewable materials and the built environment in Europe, and particularly Germany. There is an increasing focus on a whole-systems and wholelife performance approach, and integrated manufacturing and delivery methods (e.g. use of Building Information Modelling or BIM-compliant tools) that could spur innovation, not just in a technological sense but especially in business and delivery models.

Opportunities for a new generation of lightweight and eco-friendly construction are outlined. Sustained innovation and increased rates of industry and market transformation are required to meet our society’s most pressing problems today and to thrive in a changing world.

Presenter:
Greg is Senior Science Leader at CSIRO. Based in Melbourne, he leads and manages R&D projects related to sustainable built environment and transitions to urban sustainability. He recently spent a year in Germany as the Wilhelm Klauditz Fellow at Fraunhofer WKI, and DAAD Visiting Professor at Technische Universität Braunschweig. Greg has received numerous international awards, and has led a range of innovation initiatives in Australia, the Asia-Pacific, the US and Europe. He often serves as an expert consultant to industry, government and international organisations such as the UN
